Wintering

A phrase that has been illuminated lately. Yes, probably because we're experiencing the effects of winter in the northern hemisphere. But I think it's become more prevalent because the collective is awakening to the wisdom of the Earth once again. Where there are true winters, we see a chapter of the cycle as such: the earth becomes more dormant. Restful. Passive. Slow Motion. Nature accepts the changes in conditions with ease and grace, surrendering to what is. She may not know what's next, but she trusts that whatever it is-is just right for her. She was made to move through the ever changing conditions, and knows she will remain connected to the wide web, no matter her status. In reality, this effortless surrender and adaptation to the conditions is not new for nature, nor is it exclusive to winter. The earth commits to these qualities no matter what. It's just easier for us observe in a more "extreme" season, such as Winter. Hmm. Interesting, right? Nature is always steady, and present. Not acting based on the past or the future, (although the wisdom of both resides in her veins) rather, responding to the very present moment at hand. Whether it's 90 degrees, pouring rain and the mycelial network is working double time to communicate where the water needs to go...or, if it's the dead of winter and the tree sap focuses its energy to protect its roots from the freezing temperatures. Nature is devoted to the undeniable interbeing and presence required to be of service to its community. So: wintering. Perhaps winter gives us more permission to slow down. Of course, we're more likely indoors more often, not starting too many new hobbies or projects, etc. But what if we incorporated this wisdom into everyday life throughout the seasons, like nature does? What if we surrendered to being in the now, not tarnished by our past or anxiously living for what's next? What does that feel and look like? For us? For our families? For our communities? For our Earth? Happy Wintering, Community!
